Going Beyond Care: A Moment That Showcases True Compassion at Park Beck Care Home

At Park Beck Care Home, we believe that compassionate care extends beyond our residents, it embraces their families, friends, and the wider community. Recently, our manager, Theresa Marshall, demonstrated exactly what person-centred care truly means in a moment that made a lasting difference to a family in distress.

One afternoon, the home received a distressing call from the friend of a resident’s husband. She was understandably shaken and unsure what to do. He had collapsed in a local shop, and although emergency services had been called, they had advised it could take up to an hour for help to arrive. Feeling helpless and worried, she reached out to the care home for guidance.

Without hesitation, Theresa acted immediately. She got into her car and drove straight to the shop to offer support. When she arrived, he was extremely pale, had been sick, and was visibly anxious. Providing calm reassurance, she helped him into her car and gently explained that she would make sure he received the care he needed.

Understanding how vulnerable and distressed he felt, especially after becoming unwell in public. Theresa made the compassionate decision to first take him home. She supported him in washing, changing into clean clothes, and regaining his comfort and dignity. Once he felt more settled, she then drove him safely to the hospital, ensuring he was not alone during what had been a frightening and overwhelming experience.

Following the incident, both he and his friend expressed their heartfelt gratitude. They later visited the home with a beautiful bouquet of flowers, sharing that they didn’t know what they would have done without Theresa’s support. Their appreciation was a touching reminder of the importance of kindness, empathy, and being present when people need it most.

This moment reflects the true values we uphold every day. For us, caring doesn’t stop with residents alone, when someone becomes part of our care home, their loved ones become part of our extended community too. Theresa Marshall’s act of kindness is a powerful example of going beyond expectations to protect dignity, provide reassurance, and ensure no one feels alone in a moment of need.
