When Can Someone Be Admitted to a Care Home?

Posted on 1st April 2021

People move into care in a variety of circumstances, but for each person, it’s considered a major life event. A question many individuals and families ask is why they should choose a care home and how to know when it’s the right time to make the move. It may be time to think about a home if your friend or family member is struggling to live by themselves, even if this involves the help of carers and/or relatives. Another reason may be following spending some time in a hospital, whereby a needs assessment suggests that a care home would provide the best supervision and care for your relative or friend to live.

There are two types of care homes; nursing and residential. It’s important to understand your loved one’s needs and requirements, to ensure that they receive the right care at the right home. A nursing home will mostly provide medical treatment, whereas a residential care home will provide additional personal care. Some care homes offer both residential and nursing care places. We try our very best to accommodate the resident's requests. Always a popular choice is a music and in our home, we have a number of Elvis fans so have been lucky enough to have a visit from Elvis Claus! Our outside trips have been within our local community.

There are many reasons why a care home can be the best solution. Here are just some of the many benefits of choosing a care home:

Safety - The safety of your loved one is always a top priority, and care homes offer just that. When the elderly and vulnerable struggle to look after themselves efficiently, sometimes safety hazards can arise. Care homes are staffed 24/7, with nurses available to help if need be.

Companionship - Your friend or relative may not always have the opportunity to socialise with people their age when living alone. In care homes not only will your loved one be able to sit and socialise with people of similar age, but also those that are in the same circumstances.

Mental Stimulation - As people become more vulnerable, it is essential they keep their mind and body stimulated. At care homes, there is a range of activities each day so that there is always something to do. Take a look at our range of leisure and lifestyle services. The staff makes it extra special for our residents by singing Christmas carols, arranging for Father Christmas to visit, and just making the spirit of Christmas felt in all corners of the home.

How to Know When it’s the Right Time

It’s always difficult to know when the right time is to get your friend or relative admitted to a care home. We’ve put together a useful guide to help you make an informed decision. Everybody needs additional help from time to time, but it is important to consider certain situations that may mean your loved one requires care from a home. For example, if the person you’re supporting has suffered significant physical or mental deterioration, has experienced the loss of a partner or close family member, or shows signs of loneliness or depression. It might be time to consider a care home if these signs are present.

Personal and Nursing Care Assistance

A residential home will offer personal care. This includes help getting out of bed, going to the toilet, eating meals, and much more. A residential care home may be the best solution for those who can no longer look after themselves and cannot meet their personal needs at home. If the person you’re supporting is unable to leave their bed or requires medical attention, long-term nursing care is available at a nursing home. A nursing home will provide the necessary level of care to your friend or relative.

Choosing a Care Home

If you decide it’s the right time to start looking for a care home, you should consider the following factors.

  • Does this care home provide the right level of care for my loved one?

  • Are there any vacancies?

  • Is there a brochure? It’s important to read their brochure thoroughly.

  • Take a look at the most recent expectation of the care home on the CQC website.
